MELISSA STEPHENSON
Presentation: Introduction to Practical Representation Friday (5/18) at 1:15pm
Melissa Stephenson, J.D. comes to the N.M. Victims Rights Project after more than a decade of public service developing and championing constitutional and statutory rights for persons with severe disabilities. As a Presidential Management Intern, she worked with the President’s Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities, and was involved in the passage of the American with Disabilities Act. Melissa’s legal work has predominately been appellate, and she has practiced in front of both state and federal appellate courts, including a recent argument in front of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, and a N.M. Supreme Court case securing victim trial and appellate standing to assert and enforce their rights, including the right to be present throughout the trial despite the invocation of the rule of sequestration. Melissa is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, is the co-author of Wharton's Criminal Procedure (Vol.s 1-3), and has taught law classes at both the University of New Mexico school of law and the PLSI American Indian Law Center.
