Rights Education

NCVLI has a commitment to educating attorneys, victim advocates, victims and the entire justice system on victim law. In fact, NCVLI is so strongly committed to education that it requires even its subgranted to legal clinics to devote a portion of their resources to education – the result, NCVLI’s network of legal clinics had educated over 11,700 individuals nationwide on victims’ rights enforcement as of fall 2007.

NCVLI’s own education efforts take six primary forms.

Crime Victim Law & Litigation Conference.
The Conference, held in Portland, Oregon each year, provides an opportunity for victims, attorneys, advocates, prosecutors and other law enforcement/criminal justice personnel to meet, network, and increase their knowledge of victim law. The Conference helps attorneys and advocates develop skills to effectively represent victims in the justice systems, and also fosters the national conversation on the advancement of rights.
Trainings Nationwide.
NCVLI’s attorneys provide training on victim law to attorney and advocate audiences nationwide both in-person and assisted by technology.
Crime Victim Litigation Clinic.
NCVLI’s attorneys teach a legal clinic on the campus of Lewis & Clark law school to afford law students the opportunity to learn victim law in a practical setting by working on actual victim law issues and cases.
NCVLI News.
NCVLI’s bi-annual newsletter, NCVLI News, is distributed nationwide, providing its audience of victims, attorneys, and advocates, with cutting edge information on victim law issues and highlights of recent developments in the field. Victim Law Library.
NCVLI’s legal team regularly writes educational memoranda, articles, and case summaries on victim law, which are designed to inform both the lay person and the lawyer about what rights exist and how these rights should be afforded. This library of materials is accessible by individuals and organizations who seek assistance from NCVLI.
NAVRA.
The National Alliance of Victims’ Rights Attorneys conducts regular teleconference trainings for its membership and publishes updates containing summaries of the most recent court decisions.
