After two years of work, in August 2007, the ABA adopted Standards of Practice for Lawyers Representing Victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking in Civil Protection Order Cases to improve the quality of representation provided to victims in these cases and to increase awareness of the need for high quality representation. The ABA Commission on Domestic Violence worked in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, the Violence Against Women Prosecution Center, American Prosecutors Research Institute at the National District Attorneys Association, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, and the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs to develop and adopt these Standards, incorporating ethical and practice guidelines for attorneys in these cases, specifically including coordination with the criminal justice system. This workshop will discuss the standards and the hope that these standards be adopted by court systems and legal programs across the country in training attorneys and developing policy.
